In the context of busy lives they tend to blend in. During the day boys playing in the downtown grove or a bird perched near a stream seem so commonplace that they are easily overlooked. Busy schedules and task-oriented minds easily overlook the heavy presence of each piece.

After the sun has set and the business doors close each sculpture takes on a new unique quality. Some are lit, creating a feeling of grandeur in isolation, demanding attention amidst the now barren landscape. Others seem out of place. Removed from the context of daily activity there is an awkwardness to its very presence. Those that are unlit slip away in darkness hidden by the impression of diminished worth.

Capturing each piece while the world is sound asleep creates a personal dialog between the sculpture and the photographer. There is now a one-on-one relationship and more thought can be devoted to setting up and capturing the shot. The irony of course is re-capturing a moment in time that has already been captured by the sculpture itself. Regardless there is a serene and calming nature in obtaining the image and, in the photographers opinion, a deeper appreciation for the sculpture itself. The final product is something less commonplace than traditional landscape photography that is equally pleasing to observe.iamsomewherehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02789033629444171033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1278692454065692893.post-58598597164590391082010-05-06T14:37:00.000-07:002010-05-06T14:46:08.748-07:00Artist - Salvador Dali<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 149px; height: 135px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEia6KsZa-JJ_1vjHQpcr27Xl9XjJaJuXkxgRrtiWBnLZKSLcrWRI6KWVRkzGOAHjQzaPuPTsYuOpLW2k0FQzscpZtVSOuilHO0TGHNOKHg4_GeVd79TPfWgAMEBdbDhjuNGdauhtZuMEE90/s320/salvador-dali.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468276105795028850" />Salvador Dali (1904-1989) was originally a Cubist but then became the best known example of the surrealism school of painting, being renowned for the vivid and bizarre content of his pictures. The word 'dali-esque' has become associated with surrealism. In addition to his painting skills, which were strongly influenced by the old masters of the Italian renaissance, his creative talents extended to film, sculpture, and photography.

As a surrealist, Dali emphasized the idea of absurdity and the role of the unconscious in his art. His waxed moustache, general eccentricity and self-promotion accorded him wide public recognition and significant commercial success during his lifetime.

Among his best known works of art, are: The Persistence of Memory (1931), Soft Construction with Boiled Beans (1936) and The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory (1954). The Persistence of Memory (La persistencia de la memoria) is probably Dalí's most famous oil painting. The picture introduced his image of the soft melting pocket watch - reality being nothing but the Camembert cheese of space and time - and epitomised the artist's notion of of "softness" and "hardness", which was central to his thinking of the time.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVlBu4zmCxDBOewFcWv96BzcTjuuileRLRJ_mcJbqbadlczGWwSOoKJXgFy1qYfAc-Wskkz3UnExW6tn_ZdcZERy8OTxAhiOLwrWs9TeV_VpoP7HDtjp038PCtHep2HSPbpSmtso51begf/s320/the_persistence_of_memory_1931_salvador_dali.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468276234436537154" />

This clock-imagery can be seen as a visual representation of Einstein's theory of Relativity, showing how gravity affects and distorts time.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 274px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmN5_R_W25QgBT7fNMxfATY2kGr5_6eu0NIKjR5Ct07O8t2vU-sJrYPz-PGqYKTUCyULkZhRQ3ZSy40ZWUTS73yjhvcatxal8xgc2v9nZJON-COXqfhwktHUJJW5Xbc3rXdvv_7DbIlVFg/s320/Salvador-Dali-EnfGeo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468276364131859378" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 246px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5VRnRHYnAV1YDgQkJTk1F48G-LdqK1aR4NTggR3L9BavRq065dbMnIXDxc5GRRRq-oK7NAcxHhiR-2UUw-bNZziUnNZLsC6yxyped4shlq_rkMuyvy6V_ASMVe_hKzqNJ_yBLBq0K5h4g/s320/salvador-dali-three-sphinxes-of-bikini.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468276479546929682" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 316px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieHmkHepulOHaqwrMADYIQYsHV7dwbB0Wujg5FzfvJn-a07_atnUjs4B3mwfcOuAfCj373WO-QNnKci2c5XUuOfRQe19VPdkuJT3FoJ8D_FPyECimsWJ8KbcgrG6kaRWsn1pxAcRXiormn/s320/salvador_dali1_1000.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468276569811345666" />iamsomewherehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02789033629444171033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1278692454065692893.post-87773078856609577922010-05-06T14:12:00.000-07:002010-05-06T14:22:32.291-07:00B&W Photo - SeriesFor our intro to photography final we had to present 6 photos that held their own weight, yet worked together as a series. I chose to try exploring night photography. I know it's a bit more difficult, but I've always wanted to try it out... here was my perfect opportunity.

What I've posted here are from my digital camera - which I used to set up the shot for my film camera. After I had positioned the shot how I thought I wanted it, I'd just swap cameras out. Kinda cheating I know... but I didn't want to waste time and film. There are too many projects going on at once to screw this one up and have to spend additional hours. Not all the pictures made it into the final series, but I'm still fond of them. Enjoy!

<img style="cursor:pointer; He was THE illustrator of the Catholic faith and divine right of kings. He was also a classical scholar, art-collector and diplomat. As a painter, Rubens is renowned for his Counter-Reformation altarpieces, ceiling-paintings, portraits, landscapes, and especially his history painting with its mythological and allegorical messages. His masterpieces include: Venus at the Mirror, Samson and Delilah, The Massacre Of The Innocents, and The Judgement Of Paris. Other interesting works include: Four Studies of the Head of a Negro.

Rubens often used pupils and assistants to complete a painting. An erudite and cosmopolitan artist, Rubens was born in Germany, settled in Antwerp (now Belgium), had a Spanish wife and became Court Painter to the Spanish Govenors of the Netherlands. He was knighted by both Philip IV, king of Spain, and Charles I, king of England.

Rubens' artworks are commonly divided into three groups: those painted by Rubens himself, those which he helped to paint (typically painting hands and faces), and those he merely supervised. He was assisted by a number of students and apprentices, while he often assigned certain elements of his larger paintings (e.g. animals or still-life groupings) to specialists such as Snyders or Jordaens.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 256px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8uY4JgxF0wt695TmhKihE_w5EV2788hcRmu74zvSlvE8lp1AhaL6bMveZBxjssXdMrgeFHQ-q1aJBcJXVr572sFPhzZwnxYz3DDMv8sQX5gdE4H00dnMLPn8YQSSQGtcrlzi_rE4y4pzS/s320/venus.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468226247298375426" />

Paintings of Venus admiring herself were not uncommon during the Renaissance and Baroque eras. Rubens' Venus before the Mirror - an improvement on Titian's painting Venus with a Mirror - reinterprets the theme according to the spirit of the Northern Baroque. Rubens' Venus is more human than Titian's. Her figure is fuller, more curvaceous. Her golden hair cascades down her back, and instead of gazing at her own beauty she catches the eye of the viewer.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7LLeQsVTal1O6WO_wly_h0-AxaAtFEgv643iv58fIFOmXkZok5koAKSUh3XFNvoYv-oqd1nqyR3NJGkpAEwSHcndbiNimd3rEe3_tx9GpZ_IZLrT5Bsi1i7dw-acRzUbvwGyVy5bOhKCf/s320/rubens2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468227225959328402" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 260px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBD3fHVLZnsSDoNYdq4ZtlaGiJKgKFDbt8ouqSxRWlntX8cdWnsp4tKB2aim3SjA8-ctHTUwfHlhDCqC2p-HQwIkehwAMwRRFZIg5-Cb1G0EWOH3gKqkpjh6I2YNS1e8zE-wkjf4NJYDcd/s320/rubens3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468227810568654866" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4MzFZGl5bAZ1eqCRkrsmLqQUKkfUmL4RW3fxv2fKFygz8W_hJjmi0EN577SmcaqoY3Ms_2mQMWgD1Jk6PcHVKa2udjDOWB_GfPHGcbQfe6FUvkkTeSOjzwvD7LKF-mq4pv38AN0OAa3zd/s320/rubens4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468228692562355106" />iamsomewherehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02789033629444171033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1278692454065692893.post-55191781979272087542010-05-06T08:54:00.001-07:002010-05-06T09:21:08.441-07:00Artist - Charles Marion Russell<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 230px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0UC0I-sp-yPsg7DMuaTTd088-2mGZfQEuFAr3cZYO-iTvUIuIE6rKrU49ZRyqAiH8snyvUW_w_gcUAEyOU3A6vewtyWcG6_cbOPIJC22Gc2htksNiwoWOyTTfRVlCfr6EbzUBr2e_dmLg/s320/431px-Charles_Marion_Russell.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468192275101008002" />Charles Marion Russell (1864-1926) was such an important and prolific Western artist, his works can be found in over 50 museums (and countless galleries, I'm sure) in the United States and even around the world.

Russell was proficient in several mediums. He painted in oils, gouache (a type of watercolor), and sculpted. You will find that you can view many copies of his popular cast-bronze sculptures in a number of venues, because bronzes are made by pouring molten metal into a mold made from the original piece of artwork. Bronze pieces are usually made in limited quantities at a foundry. The numbered copies of these bronzes are very collectible, with the first editions, usually numbered on the sculpture like a print. Most Western art museums contain at least a few works by this influential artist.

Russell's representational style included cowboys, indians, and landscapes inspired by visits to National Parks, California, Arizona, and Colorado. The color palettes are muted, but realistic, and his paintings and sculptures are dominated by a sense of movement and action. Russell depicted a mythic American West.

Charles Russell's paintings are more valuable than his sculpture, simply because their numbers are fewer. However, his sculpture is probably what he is best known for, again, because it is so prolific.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfce7uaJTQ3wIVx_TSgfefRI6zxmBfarrskxM1cIln3L8rukjzuR455lyXOfIJQ7L42NOR169EJOK-9hnXfgZqtIU8SfEFyeF6LYzTgLHhTzkVlN1_LwNGBEthyphenhyphenQKZyua3CICKYIn16AFA/s320/Charles_Marion_Russell_RUC024.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468192637826274770" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 301px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghWJ52SLhiXm_dlBafj2GQA_CUeyASEmCpSgUCAuqrdvbgvQ-X-H2x8NvceLNfK_ernfw1cWHV28J7a43REi5gcuQ-Gw65vAx8pP1Pl7AXmDUx4lK7UBmlPagrKJkKxvaejjZnmKmqzx9B/s320/Russell-Charles-Marion.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468192736374457202" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh761zzWGqqBUAb868Wl9-yg-akvBCKg5QWWiX2hX2YLBrSmS0MvYbiwRaNssjPhaud_HmQtP1RkgCugbH-HAyVsCfTZUKS7U726f1mC0GJwIf2UlUtxsgmRAnWVHLGznSuxrMHFvSxDvcL/s320/russthewagonboss.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468192828381094210" />iamsomewherehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02789033629444171033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1278692454065692893.post-88471035490640844382010-05-06T08:28:00.000-07:002010-05-06T08:53:24.835-07:00Project 4 - COMPLETION14 hours... seriously!? I spent 14 hours on Thursday working on this piece. The good news is that, regardless of no one but Marshall showing up during the day to help out, I think we'll finish on time... or close.

I spent most of the day wiring the 19 individual LED lights, running the wiring behind the base-board and securing the LED's inside the individual boxes at the correct angle to properly illuminate each image. I was faily proud of myself for finding the LED's at an amazing price. Purchased individually from Radio Shack, they were over $2.00 each. I took some advice from Erin and did some shopping at Harbor Freight Tools. I scored a 27-LED light for $3.99. That's approximately $0.15 per LED! I'm loving China right now. All I needed to do was take the light apart, desolder and extract each LED... awesome.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCAirl84ifZ66yGs9PTBHb4TMC6xcBwB2OZdMapfJQm6GSN4tYWO-rGgW1wJqXUe6U_mdO7-L8hEyPSTuQ9rNM3jKcNfz13KWGVzXRkjpKFU7y4QTfUGWpuSv2lPbYuaO7NqVtU6lDPy8o/s320/ledExtraction.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468183212800521938" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLO46vkrkuO_hUhm2FfwWCWQyxMqiUaa-YWrhz7YKsoNaywoX1nFaGa7NQpZwkoi_il7NlwMW_0j_s1ejS4db9GpxNQ1JWzrstEgGEWgWbJotszBzYv9QyTn-2oDQxQgvNGcZ7kUQgskNp/s320/LED.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468183303003220450" />

Our biggest problem surfaced when figuring out a way to secure the individual boxes to the base-board. The 1/8" MDF that the boxes are constructed of would be near impossible to get from the back of the base-board with the pneumatic nailer, so we tried a variety of glues. This was by far the most frustrating part of the entire process. After trying a few different glues, waiting for them to dry, then watching the boxes fall off as we lifted the base-board vertical brought a mixture of anger and frustration. We were running out of time. Finally we found a 5 minute epoxy compound in the sculpture studio that did the trick.

Needless to say we didn't finish by class time, but by a superfluous outpouring of grace from Erin our installation date was extended. The rest of the group (with the exception of Allen) showed up to finish painting. Even Jane and Jenae, who weren't part of our group volunteered to paint.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8Pvhyphenhyphen9xPfAQOSoPzy8eL1QrGyfatLq41XWzqbAPev1nXOfGECR8ZH2WRrkfidAPVH5ND3rO1-B7kVKYHsHFzT0zLl5iwlf_Gk27VryjOUXbegSTlTuiWayWFVGKlcA2bKoY0svgJaed_F/s320/finished.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468185330408831442" />

Saturday Marshall and I met up, grabbed a couple of students on campus and moved he sucker to PAW 112. I thought my arms were going to fall off half way across campus. My only motivation to keep going was that so many hours of my life had been sucked away by this project there was no way in hell I was going to drop it now.

It was almost surreal to see it finished and installed. This was a beast of a project, and while there were things about it that I wish would have turned out differently it was, overall, a great experience.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb5y6pG-Mdzjs-MUxBg6l1xIlG7BSu-C_lUOoHTR3emjjcdR3sAPE2Z0SX4w8MrW6rHubNVoG6gnFX3R1SNeIbWOclw8qTSZLj3CpAbfjpst3zLYnEdoCYYo-lVSctHGr1fSR8mp5nfYD0/s320/seeGlow.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468185459942054258" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIRHef2l7yuzJpp7xiXHdu6aT7jHGdLgDETyeOPqkvouDXiZSXyfx9J1FM-SJmKyqeA8wzw7bi53o7UnYz3Dit5SI9T925r8b8vTAx3_XMLiskGUBVYZeVb2qjxh2VYBqoa4eSlL2gvr6X/s320/peeping.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468185691886962498" />iamsomewherehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02789033629444171033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1278692454065692893.post-39055583997241347272010-05-06T08:14:00.000-07:002010-05-06T09:15:02.894-07:00Artist - Albert Bierstadt<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 312px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1zvBODg75aiy0dmPgxbZxt-WPNete650dNypzBcb0BUOzvtAzgS0hlg6fXPU3qJMHT5bbW6r9DzGtgVIESI4tahZz3l_jYqd5N0NvKznHyD_veikvXIECQ6sXn8jWeExKavFhPlpk4OQ0/s320/Bierstadt.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468176405490829170" />Albert Bierstadt (1830 - 1902) was a German/American painter best known for his romantic landscapes. He was very productive and very financially successful during his time. One of his commissioned paintings brought him $25,000 over 150 years ago. A lot of money now, an astronomical sum for a painter in the 19th century, I'm sure!

Bierstadt's popularity was well-justified. His beautiful landscapes (amazing detail!) manipulate light using "luminism". His paintings of beautiful places like Yosemite, Yellowstone, California, etc. often use strong contrasts of light and darkness of chiaroscuro. Though I personally think it fits Bierstadt's work and his European influences... Bierstadt uses this effect to create romance and grandeur in his landscapes. His work fueled the imagination of many Americans who settled in the West, and his paintings helped Easterners to appreciate the lands that later became a part of the U.S. National Park system.

Bierstadt belonged to the Hudson River School of painters, and worked in many mediums, including oils, pastels, watercolors, gouache, charcoal, and inks. His productive output, popularity, and status both now and then have caused his works to appear in over 100 museums across the United States. Bierstadt is one of my personal favorite artists. His paintings of Yosemite are inspirational and kick ass.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMBcVTqbl11APbulu4-O2yrXQVuUmMRuFOqXV0y8qoeitPHJPbPPU-miSDOIqpmhnwIpsgN-UNt0bXA6l0X3H62tw3hyphenhyphenVqhqj8Wcq4hOtbqZ3jrrJpjYFfFZZq-5WTTdB3qjVuPxVLdnqb/s320/Looking_Down_Yosemite-Valley.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468177497141685346" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 189px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMW1f_xAhoMFculN-z9D3Ogd4i5knKGN6fFYbDpSnkr7FcTWWqvlXR7Uied652k8FcOFZVQqfuibcEUILHIb458MREgDZgMFrj1JW-3cZFNoFXQjQS0IocdzT8EL-uPESigpf3hH3FsGT3/s320/Albert_Bierstadt,_Among_the_Sierra_Nevada_Mountains.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468177742856403298" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 190px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbnlJjG31jqNnLwQGjQCcMTP-gMTbZEfyDvG6fiwcoms_tkeXlgoJh-6De5TzP4wtMP1RoJlNQxZfYSGaD54H28E3daZrERlINsv-J-AwgXGfQ3vhwjw3cThlKjeeD14BoAex20gcxp-mH/s320/Bierstadt_LandersPeak_1863.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468177899731832290" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 222px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjscRK4NxUzMi-qUyYPjtNsLx5nxvEX7tUC1odn4giZCEELSWrGHZH3pPiD-tj_bRdDbxm6Fu2aVmXEFHBS3jNt1h-UjG7f4Mgn01kN2ZcECQhiK0kPj_yOnR1UuXU8JkICiA96W9BOaOZ2/s320/Sierra_Nevada_Albert_Bierstadt_circa_1871.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468178178275009794" />iamsomewherehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02789033629444171033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1278692454065692893.post-13011910474709864132010-05-03T20:03:00.000-07:002010-05-03T23:16:48.873-07:00Project 4 - UPDATE 2<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlyrSE4QFkedc66IzOpXERlyJYF_ki5jnI5UO4i8NoDF8aj1_diyAo4jyhLBvQOLv3UWx_awKaPYMwAXdksp5Cdrt-mvm1DeJWkLOEPir_LFSGpmarRs1nEiszCOiZQT1VJIrwzYKan-ZU/s320/BoardMeasure.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5467291409189754098" />

Next class/studio was spent finishing up the boxes and laying down the grid on the base sheet. Van Eyck mastered the art of oil painting, which was a new invention at the time. He is considered one of the most talented painters of 15th century Europe and is best known for his highly realistic figure painting, usually on religious subjects (again, Renaissance), and portrait art. His three-quarter pose of face together with his mastery of oils brought a surprising new realism to portraiture, and made him one of the foremost painters of the Northern Renaissance, much in demand by the emerging bourgeoisie and merchant class.

Born in Maaseik, Belgium around 1395, little is known of his early life. It is thought that the painter Hubert van Eyck was his brother. Another younger brother, Lambert van Eyck is mentioned in court documents and it is thought he may have been a painter too.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 180px; height: 196px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI97zBXRwP1C4BN6MJ57ti09l37uwcmnn6LY7UEIOh_bvBUDHstB7W2BSRnsyG7qqVxfYHwAVfYVbFBGSQDslq_OzRZ7w3NapmRNAAVBQPZ5lzOZ9BwGIvEEpNcRp4KTTnfTLDbWBI5M-Y/s320/eyck-ghent-center.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5467124296542007490" />

The Ghent Altarpiece is considered his first masterpiece, followed closely by the Arnolfini Portrait. Van Eyck's ability to manipulate oil paints to produce realistic representations of the natural world is why he became so popular.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 140px; height: 190px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWm3aswvKd3sUtjXodHDvqfBSfvp-0sanZVt-MV0EOiM1PACNPJJ1o2kDNTLzmNAmF6DzgkNiorN2tEsrdf3AjZRXdc1sgrJXDfojnZK1Y2x4jDgSFkAT6SlWWhr-QCmG91I4hOpPsHYfM/s320/eyck-turban.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5467124533816345554" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 166px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgio0OjUpjP-kAYv0Ig47-uNZI4WcfxXmZAboP6B9Gp45QqOima6sO1vsRxm_R7Oly8h7Rm_LUVVsU2EodMlCpxOoN_s4VExK7vejfHWUWBMh23PVkd2zct2XZsRfQOUNmP_FygM9r6QO2_/s320/adam.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5467125027379125778" />iamsomewherehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02789033629444171033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1278692454065692893.post-30943674335609435432010-05-02T22:01:00.000-07:002010-05-06T09:15:50.079-07:00Artist - Andy Warhol<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 319px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRvkxs5ds6lXgytqIl2LcCu7Vgi7c_2vM0ZDjmHDfjduCbR_0igrS66Ll3WT6tMN7aXl6MYNHerpYYCWFR8z87pib3MJnSjC_P93audIPrRGqysVdRoRXtkgECNK292ImyBVtDdGAPrLWY/s320/andy-warhol.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5466905171354455314" />Andy Warhol (1928 - 1987), whose full name is Andrew Warhola, was an American painter, printmaker, and filmmaker who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. After a career as a commercial illustrator, Warhol became famous worldwide for his work as a painter, avant-garde filmmaker, record producer, author, and public figure known for his membership in wide range of social circles that included bohemian street people, distinguished intellectuals, Hollywood celebrities and wealthy patrons.

Warhol worked across a wide range of media… painting, photography, drawing, and sculpture. He was regarded as a highly prolific filmmaker. Between 1963 and 1968, he made more than 60 films, plus some 500 short black-and-white "screen test" portraits of Factory visitors. One of his most famous films, Sleep, monitors poet John Giorno sleeping for six hours. The private transaction was reported in a 2009 article in The Economist, which described Warhol as the "bellwether of the art market." $100 million is a benchmark price that only a handful of other artists have achieved.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 230px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKnaPksByRTXlW0X7J3x3JBKE7c1BiBYP_4HrNEu8-3nrLqgvMW31QxWaJmPtGQUHr7E53OhfE69y3dwh3wppVw9Lk1xkvXf5_w88WtjwanS7dNCS4iudrTts4VxsynoNLzLXgFTrD7KEm/s320/andy-warhol-che-guevara.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5466905267876591058" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNaxO-5yi-L4Ny5KTmoIwx11qTlFtLoiHi1RUq3Bwwr79yrC0dRaYc75_Lr3wFIatCCVWjv9ObVLeqKJ-i04Pgf_lqe_GGNy27WLPspwGaLNUcI2ueBJm7sH0nYP-D3LNNnzGkD4Hpc7ec/s320/andy-warhol-soupcan.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5466905397244897378" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 317px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRnAnTFJsgLl1R3auAFyMn75GD6MycDueDxmVaSQUfumDrjRCV_x7hw7j3NIf6y0XpfaGmaut4ng0iilxp9RkZbLvw3kJx-XdD4lnmAfdWiwCQNp8Dxv0P5MHpDFgYIpf4PudDF2fdvIzL/s320/sk_marylin.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5466905510385493810" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 251px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ6O9Bd5A46WRBf_tfqaZM_u-un_z7xCWdqid4XNU0sjpXCWVrt-Aw7I-dla6gK2OtFjF_H9mw2ziLE9GziVEr6Xd0RVgZ_0CmI8oEeyspNwtzIW8CldjSYH8eCqeBkz5trfBSewlquEqu/s320/andy-warhol-diamond-dust-shoes-1980-181010.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5466905620507218946" />iamsomewherehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02789033629444171033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1278692454065692893.post-44122839676933544992010-04-27T22:06:00.000-07:002010-04-27T22:15:33.066-07:00Project 4 - UPDATE 1<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZVb2IbvhihtyZizm_krJLT0i09b3mbZ7yM6XM7hpqMY95Y7JET114EZIQhcq0F9rJZRlUgxU_H69ygGWilxDrirHJfCsl5eGlkEE3Ti8uMReEa1EI2sMiq2IbemTUyO8S_tjH7JBHoVmO/s320/buildingBoxes.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465051814958015650" />
Marshall and I got an early start by working on Saturday. If given a few moments, each of us can conjure images in our minds of things we desire to keep left unseen. Most of us would be embarrassed or ashamed to reveal these to friends, family or even complete strangers. The installations will target taboo issues in a series of boxes containing images that are viewable only through a “voyeuresqe” peep hole, some of which contain lenses or other means to alter/change the meaning contained within.

Process: Members from the team will be assigned tasks. Construction of the unit itself will require, at minimum, intermediate craftsmanship skills. Images will need to be collected/created to represent each situation. Each image will be placed in a box representative of an idea that supports the over-all theme. A small slit in the top panel of each box will provide illumination for the eye of the viewer as they examine each through the appropriate peep hole.

Installation: The display will be constructed through a series of boxes at varying levels of height, attached to a large 4’ x 8’ sheet of ply. The final piece will be attached to the museum wall at an appropriate height so that any individual can easily access/view all of the series.

Items Needed:

• 4’ x 8’ sheet of plywood
• Material to construct each box (TBD)
• 20 – 30 images
• Paint & paint supplies
• Assorted lenses to alter perspective/meaningiamsomewherehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02789033629444171033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1278692454065692893.post-60946356347541955772010-04-25T15:30:00.001-07:002010-04-28T22:49:48.422-07:00Artist - Thomas Ott<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 218px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgRcAViC6gXAkdCKWTYgywDQmlrOKPXdIOEG_7600176g_RFueVY9mbG0l4hCmI2UYWXWUoRABcGDxcsFqdpexLl51g3QmyZCM3jJPguB510vLGXlUdSmB7vG-loniyCXv4jP4_Xj1K3AR/s320/sierre98-thomasott.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465431750268086546" />Thomas Ott (1966) is a German artist from Zürich. He received training as a graphic artist at the School of Design in Zürich and has been a free-lance comics artist and illustrator since 1987. From 1998-2001 Ott attended film studies at the University of Art and Design in Zürich. He currently lives and works in Zürich and Paris. Ott is also the lead singer of The Playboys.

Ott is another "dark artist", which I seem to be gravitating to as I look through my artists' list. What makes his work unique and totally pimp is that he uses scratchboard. The level of detail and value/shading that he is able to create is phenominal. Most of his scratchboard comics are wordless with images powerful enough to provide the narrative.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 242px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-5CFCTO8khNybTs3r7JGG_o34oRIodtdDzppSu7fTNVauZrnVdn6lUKcYd-DAk4fdHCwGKj9IPDHyU0AmB80UPNYKtrctHheyHcHCdfbRGMZYTVa08NehG93ArCqsIlcze9DxZqlebUvM/s320/aliceb.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465432050223726194" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 222px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEtYchAwuIdklfIHXKm1GWntxIGujdObaRP8DEF-bLj5Lz-IensGmoP-qDYec489KnvAa9u2oAHaOUjsq79FrwuPBeQZlnGZOcWt4nN-1ktGI3rgk5eUvlEJeV8kD4dz8qIz3PqrqfL3E-/s320/ott_talesoferror.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465432171840404962" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 230px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisoEeh8KRNXRtAhJE8t3_njsXkJfvi7VY0rIt25VQpPt3GZObNZyy7PfndBoXc2DroFes7P2ZjlrdwxI4UiVwIesIF4fWwInqvkOZJ9_YvpzXawteMz-ynrSlTvVkmfRHGTuqvSsoViBxf/s320/ott_tales_of_error_1989.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465432288569790226" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 297px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheX7Uh3nreEa79oNvupOdXh-jyzcGl2KObOlNPlGQ1DUI0Wa_ZR_5vaAkSMKil-N9iU00wpvmo28yeOlWKoHVsQw_-s3Dg-7gUOZvFmZQazT39izT5ZG5y0tqrxVIpb9sREPnv7JR2ROJD/s320/portrait_ott2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465432400409595826" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 215px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7pYd_8vRGek8BsSu9T91B_jk3rdYCuvoWzNTCJCcmM6bJ_cu16E5tcTf_ZgNSZzGAPEh50jZFeYdp5HhKPDknuz3LykbH3j09Znantzlv4pY7y8brmM-zipfM2DXN61AkQsbpSK1s6btj/s320/Thomas-Ott-new-website.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465432487620742802" />

"Swiss cartoonist Ott employs neither dialogue nor captions in his stories; words appear rarely, usually as chapter titles or signs in the background. Appropriately, Ott uses the early silent cinema as a motif... In keeping with the silent movie motif, Ott uses black, white and grays, enveloping his realistically drawn characters and settings in an expressionistic mood. The characters initially display understated emotions, and their situations seem familiar. Ott's storytelling moves at a slow but steady pace, making his protagonists' extreme reactions more believable when they, and the readers, are caught in Ott's imaginatively conceived, masterfully executed traps." – Publishers Weeklyiamsomewherehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02789033629444171033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1278692454065692893.post-88885806757064326292010-04-23T19:06:00.001-07:002010-04-25T15:26:21.140-07:00Artist - Bill Plympton<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 220px; height: 274px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEincSu0K8HFqHndY9pnMEbJN5vCiO0etmo2BIDziCvBqFbMZr8pk3Krshq59bDYp07WHqIk9sfWTp1Uxsxl_Unt7SfWLbWKg9gJXB_tHvnE9daeYtmnViegL-FCNMjLgQMXO8KoZG3SGuiC/s320/Plympton.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464198701513580978" />Bill Plympton was born in Portland, Oregon, and from 1964 to 1968 he attended Portland State University, where he was a member of the film society and worked on the yearbook. In 1968, he transferred to the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

Plympton's political illustrations and cartoons have been published in a number of magazines and newspaper including The New York Times, Vogue, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, Penthouse, and National Lampoon. His political cartoon strip Plympton eventually appeared in over 20 newspapers. I can remember watching these as a child because distinctive style is so easily recognized.

Plympton is considered the first animator to draw every frame for an animated feature film by himself. Signe Baumane, also a director and animator, has been inking and painting Plympton's cels for many years. As of 2006, Plympton had created 26 animated short films and five animated features. He has also published a comic book, The Sleazy Cartoons of Bill Plympton. Plympton usually publishes a graphic novel version during the production of each feature in order to raise money for the film itself.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 176px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiON-se3pYbJpjRPINe3LpnEZL0QNIEqpRFxlJ4-2UzUsgKNNsAdX03KPHFFFq7oeXp2VAEAMUM9vc3FTEFSt0rsRuSXsOhEiRKWw93Ko5q0ndw-pp4SfT9xH68pyMo3kYkgKkx1A4D6eg2/s320/movie.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464204356061478626" />
"Idiots and Angels" - Click HERE to watch preview

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 243px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2coRRfJ5h7XacRFNPokcQxCO_Th7Bvh8m_fsOnGibT6al2HY949VI4UmUzICHxUNY6-8IPwbW8ow3FYLhpfgRrB1E-6SESALHeOs7I92ZkPBEtjeODKnL92qLddF93C6J6R5j7KNm2roT/s320/default.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464204928776331698" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 304px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkTxD1_nzJF3nZwkoCYzqTKUVn37n7PG0mtkzZmZIgEZfyP__E_ToChJ5mLFU67g_oO9U9qGa-bEPUmTRV3aXND7iLUJ4k9xQ_-NmQScMVpY2vDhAQfGoG_ZlTAyl1jmXIxjyNv3py5t8l/s320/default_animation_now_exc_02_0706181751_id_49339.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464204999478993938" />iamsomewherehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02789033629444171033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1278692454065692893.post-33187682914599003982010-04-19T22:05:00.001-07:002010-04-21T21:26:52.182-07:00Artist - Albrecht Dürer<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 229px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb-mbR-aH3dt-gW9nEERcDQ69kqZl5pOtHbkG8JH0N0pbzMT_BkyFeLo0Vlr1fCv7p-Aq2HydNrYFn4IqyxoL3pffsaS41wF9Gz7_fkEJlo4XK4gCYqrBdLJvcHx_udU1QFwclyzUMwnqf/s320/280px-Durer_self_portarit_28.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462812065562824482" />Albrecht Dürer was a German painter, printmaker and theorist from Nuremberg. His prints established his reputation across Europe when he was still in his twenties, and he has been conventionally regarded as the greatest artist of the Northern Renaissance ever since. Dürer's introduction of classical motifs into Northern art, through his knowledge of Italian artists and German humanists, have secured his reputation as one of the most important figures of the Northern Renaissance. This is reinforced by his theoretical treatise which involve principles of mathematics, perspective and ideal proportions.

Dürer exerted a huge influence on the artists of succeeding generations, especially in printmaking, the medium through which his contemporaries mostly experienced his art, as his paintings were predominately in private collections located in only a few cities. His success in spreading his reputation across Europe through prints was undoubtedly an inspiration for major artists such as Raphael, Titian, and Parmigianino, who entered into collaborations with printmakers to distribute their work beyond their local region.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 254px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEincZX0Hht-DWjJNrt7gYkSniUTaUOmTMe_J8o4Qd1I01ZgG93hPjMC5KSarPHGKxKuVBlTD-OnpK4f5vPzkUldPAxXK66KSm4jqzu0ibq-KyuzU9sVnS3LDW_lHFG-0OmZ05cQGBJAQbZc/s320/200px-Durer_Adam_and_Eve.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462812174668342434" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 220px; height: 152px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfBa9yagNDbAnde6ZVd6SntGlEAqADgoU_AnftWVhbH9qNiiK9cWKxy3KRwLbdu-domt1AGKS-Nmbs-6SvYfNWLV7LpWim0Y7XKVk_QZZlQQKzcIjv8c2l0DVcj7LnFdbSxPZkESzekh45/s320/220px-D%C3%BCrer_-_Rhinoceros.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462812283344360706" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 205px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2AyjDSCGjfjPUn9Csbecv6d763WSpKBvpsTo3QLQTgZMR_rjGdT4ajAAkBU17VZMqS4ApqSaxWIuoZYVT88QE1rFzDnR8mHRomm9UwfGLLPvI8wIMOfuJlxiuac0AuFYVbz2Gs71g8SG2/s320/220px-St._Cristopher-D%C3%BCrer.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462813460316075058" />iamsomewherehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02789033629444171033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1278692454065692893.post-25509902437242273912010-04-19T21:09:00.000-07:002010-04-19T21:14:06.888-07:00Mira Calligraphiae Monumenta<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 258px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8g47vWQi8kxMNJxcLOmszESSrYWBQy63G_sGAwLyuS8m6rVJqESPbyt2uyB9WemVfJ2DsPwnsx0XX8-HLhNZvMSyfxV7yIXkM5hffrTl8R1I0gyKdiNtNiquRJnhQtzmv9eBSsQCAfQVQ/s320/mira-calligraphiae-set1-lg.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462067414938864322" />

I want this book so bad. I've wanted it for years and it just popped in my head again tonight, so I thought I'd look it up and see how much it was. You can click here and find out for yourself. I was like, "really?! That much for a book? I know it's amazing and all... but, really!?"

In 1561-62, Georg Bocskay, imperial secretary to the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I, inscribed the Mira calligraphiae monumenta as a testament to his preeminence among scribes. He assembled a vast selection of contemporary and historical scripts, which nearly thirty years later were further embellished by Joris Hoefnagel, Europe's last great manuscript illuminator. This book, now in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum, is reproduced here in complete facsimile form, accompanied by a commentary that includes a full description; a discussion of its patron, Rudolf II, and his cultural and historical milieu; the biographies of Hoefnagel and Bocskay; and an analysis of the manuscript's role in their careers. The introduction discusses the broader issues raised by the manuscript. Topics include Hoefnagel's nature imagery, which encompasses plants, fruits, and small animals, and its relation to the spread of interest in botany and zoology at the end of the sixteenth century. Another topic is calligraphy and its place in the art and culture of the sixteenth century. The manuscript's remarkable calligraphy will be of particular interest not only to scholars but to collectors, graphic designers, and typographers as well.

"This small book is a joy to hold and to behold, and should be of special interest to graphic designers, calligraphers, and other artists as well as to art historians. Recommended for all libraries."--Choiceiamsomewherehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02789033629444171033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1278692454065692893.post-78032195527144748682010-04-19T16:19:00.002-07:002010-04-19T16:46:13.785-07:00Artist - Jane Alexander<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 292px; height: 219px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGfR7Ny5IW2eK_gaXvhX4hUIFscbzcWQ1H_RvQThf3M8YVG_DZWyP7w-2AvBWuPfB2Wnkmrtvu9QD2eapAWj00_lG5AGa-ohXg0Hf_SzsKdWHcWMSCGoYud6ykop1l0vkHFbLebTc2NAHb/s320/art.jane.alexander.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5461994805956070690" />Jane Alexander was born in Johannesburg in 1959 and her focus is South African art. She studied at the University of Witwatersrand, receiving a B.F.A. in 1982 and a M.F.A in 1988. As a student, Alexander was influenced by the socio-political unrest of South Africa and began creating works addressing the aggression, violence, and suffering within society.

She is best known for her life-size sculptures, featuring human forms altered with horns, wings, hooves, and other found objects. Although her sculptures often have an eerie, otherwordly feel, they also manage to project very human psychological states such as alienation, loneliness, and a sense of discomfort or entrapment. The sculptures are often placed in a manner that confronts viewers, forcing them to decipher the ideas present within the work. She also works in photomontage, often using her sculptures as her subjects. She has received a number of awards and has participated in both solo and group shows in South Africa and internationally. Jane Alexander currently lives Cape Town, where she teaches at the Michaelis School of Fine Art.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 218px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUvnTQtxi03c7ZLNXq75CpMCeA-TgN4evzwOoqfjgUrxME3bNRO2-yQw4kHGVoi1aomxa5Jrb5avZC0jan8gOVMhPNQdsXZxyGqdpimX-ztJQX6ohuaYkzhWa4G9eh37HYGGT5xVkqqqA9/s320/0aabutcherbou.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5461997160078316258" />

Although she's created a number of impressive pieces, the most famous/well kown of them is The Butcher Boys (1985/86). Describe what you see

Lots of stonework at varying levels with quotes from all different people. There's quotes from Moses to Gandhi. There are benches made of stone, a waterfall, some plaques a sculpture of Ann Frank, etc.

2. Describe the varying degrees of representation

There are representations in sculpture, in the text on the plaques and through the audio that plays through the hand-crank boxes.

3. What are visual elements/principles that dominate in the memorial?

Scale... it's a very large memorial. Also the amount of stone and the "central" seating/bench area.

4. Is this memorial "site-specific"?

No, this is just in an open space downtown. I don't believe that anything happened here that relates to the evens of the memorial.

5. Who created, designed and funded this memorial?

One of the stones said, "Idaho human rights education center gratitude to Boise City council and mayor Brent Coles." But I am unaware of who actually designed and built the thing.

6. What materials/media were used to create this material?

A crap load of stone. Also metal for the sculpture, natural resources for the landscaping and someone had to record their voice to be played back for each of the audio boxes.

7. How does the text/word elements function?

They function as the part of the memorial that informs you. They give quotes, explanations of what the memorial is about.

8. Reflecting on your answers to the previous questions, what do you think was the intended meaning/function?

To make us stop and think about our rights as human beings. It's about freedom, but not taking advantage of our freedom. There's plaques remembering war victims and quotes about freedom all over the memorial. Although it's called the Ann Frank Memorial, it's not just about Ann Frank, but more about what she represents.

9. In your opinion, how successful is this memorial?

I think it's a great addition to downtown Boise. We need more impactful/cross media pieces like this. The location adds to the overall effect with the water and landscape and stone.iamsomewherehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02789033629444171033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1278692454065692893.post-39646935566227402042010-04-16T17:51:00.001-07:002010-04-21T12:52:04.975-07:00Artist - Zdzislaw Beksinski<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 125px; height: 125px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI3DUaX-3F2Emu0aV4xzqLwXw-DbrwcMgDHlqAjFGe6_0Zwtsf6JWNXqHy-5Uo5gDhQSCgQPIDprhHHivRgoCuL4pw7AhcA50PiSZUQ-GucBEJYi7LSl4e9f9A1IieBfpPQSsAWm37s2oA/s320/portrait.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462676187748966226" />

Zdzislaw Deksinski (24 February, 1929 – 21 February, 2005) was a renowned Polish painter, photographer, and sculptor who is best known as a fantasy artist. Beksinski labeled his paintings and drawings either in what he called a 'Baroque' or a 'Gothic' manner. He really had two styles. The first style came from his 'fantastic realism' period when he painted disturbing images of a surrealistic, nightmarish environments. The second style is more abstract and is shown by Beksiński's later paintings. Beksinski had no formal training as an artist. His paintings were mainly created using oil paint on hardboard panels which he personally prepared, although he also experimented with acrylic paints. He abhorred silence, and always listened to classical music while painting. He was murdered in 2005.

Beksinski's work reminds me a lot of H.R. Geiger. Very dark, very other-worldly and in a sense, very similar stylistically. Most images are somewhat anemic when it comes to color... they seem either desaturated, or limited in palette.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 254px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1Zr9Nug3jhFF3oBmf6ve6d2YRdxSN-00N-jNXh7IKboZQa7AuFvCfiJE6RoYhPAAC-pcfKIml0pD1tLAO9EOuFyqjuDTGXSqTEzLWCOXwrLpK5PBV8jZzgT7qOyhKlCj_ojQnIygPdBe2/s320/zdzislaw_beksinski.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462679427807306386" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 310px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjmDsXL1PL6ryVih3evYJBln2rF0y7nh6go0T7YOkqlYlGq6VzW2rZF3LhAkbYnUtOGDs36N9CQs6TnecRvPFBv6N_NsTQZ9D4-UhgyVf_jNgKNCfTf9oxH5DcwSfp1ygZp_F8LlPBwHy5/s320/zdzislaw-beksinski-1984.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462678785777452770" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 235px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH32pLo2PtrnkpX6pH2AegDKShnQdTLK1GVDQESVREz3xo1U21n3bXllixoGdFlbVdyFaD306F4wGSjKQ5alO8qE4m_1b4ERiEr6_yx9qGbmE0yWjCRwr6NrXu6ozTs-sYCh_MJMqW6rhF/s320/lj_ZdzislawBeksinski035.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462679616899542386" />

Where they depart from each other is in the way that the image is contructed. Geiger's work often contains elements of biomechanics. His world as well as surreal creatures often contain mechanical parts, or are entirely mechanical. Beksinski seems to stick to organic representations. There also seems to be a bit more spirituality to his work. I've noticed many pieces containing crosses, or depictions of scenes with scriptural references. Beksinski also seems to have more of an ability to work in abstract. Images that seem to have no set orientation or rules to bind them.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 270px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZrDS7PIIys98-NlgcF3WKV5sk0QrdwDiKbW8Y9tbSu4XEdJP7JMGn0IYFxE9aMR278-8AjQ3kbTlkdUo62bIqiPyWEtRVsM5qgxA4Q8lwQJVdugnDE03ky2lCUQX0e25Q92U9KnGAfCNH/s320/Picture+1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462678950315184066" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 230px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrp7SKAO2EJfRJEdZNEd9-ylzmPkXezkHDgSzK8nOygsK10cwOCCJ263FGqRDvfitaYE5CwxTFW7SjYKaucWoeqP-Dxb8xHc6gLIKYnKTRKswA0g71ntKOjnPVjjY5B2IBw_ejevy7vkKJ/s320/Picture3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462679111382468354" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 256px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgz_WMyg4DQlL-o6OxurfuIC2OnarL_eBrRhHSD-m1cznclDvdvVapfqWXCqlhQZSXaYIqIi4GqMZa05AqPvdgj_PcOVtYb9ZuJS4SN42u86aKlxCQLeMleHqS-xVolUhBWcbSmIwJuAtOi/s320/Picture+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462679303145621426" />iamsomewherehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02789033629444171033noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1278692454065692893.post-28486143039564721712010-04-16T17:11:00.001-07:002010-04-16T17:50:37.554-07:00Wedding InvitationA friend of mine asked if I'd make her wedding invitations - what an honor. This was a fun little project... I always prefer projects like this -laid back and easy going- over the the high stress corporate client with a short time frame.

During first and only meeting we met at the Library Coffee House in Meridian and talked concept. Since they were getting married at the Idaho Botanical Garden they wanted something open, natural and caz-fun. I started with what I call a "specimen sheet", which is really just a fancy name for a brainstorm. I knew that because of the large amount of copy I wanted to really focus on making it interesting typographically.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 229px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMWXFVh6QvvaTcD6EabTRe6oI-TBLmOXfOx-4liLNqO3FziGlcz1XK-OwvJAeSPwwlE5l19HUBTnK0zXXv6rbCPh9VjY-Le4L5Lwz_oq8R8MPwfViR4rxjHuXD0g54kCDqZYSJUkMBzsaW/s320/specimineSheet.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460899822083485794" />
specimen sheet

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 237px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzUcEthVKog2F2lGpK48xKSfIvI6RNgVOKhcShdkfqEb39qzOiVbJKKSvvulP2F04iUlkGNd5V12_cJtF5fEI0F8ts5_wc4jyaxTthP5qOQl9zwIjLPv2qCLPOpA8ZTm6BaU_n2wFM21st/s320/WeddinIgnvite.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460901991422405266" />
first concept

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 224px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDyma40_cHuwQUf76r8qWiYhZSgjtoDHIlGD0qawboSSSdMbTU1mESkN8tAbq_Q-qOwXc_LQc1UnRnvG_cnd3EYJwZnURW5jl6LDDRHF2UtkfpAgEieNlpp7BGNcm5DRYXrgu_AYf2bFVF/s320/rsvp.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460902130631336274" />
rsvp

They liked the first concept and that was it, done (with the exception of butchering the word "following"). Another great thing about them... I HATE doing 5,000 revisions to a project. I get sick of looking at the same damn thing and lose interest, which makes me prone to mistakes. Bad.

The final step is to choose the right paper to print them on. I dropped a sample off at the bank she works at today... His mother started him playing the violin when he was four, and he has continued to be an active musician all of his life. Fonny’s ties to the Northwest region run deep. His mother’s family settled in the central Washington area as cattle people during the mid 1800s. His father, born in 1887, was raised along the Lolo Pass in Idaho where his grandfather Davidson was a blacksmith.

While attending Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa Idaho Fonny began to study the fine art of painting. Under his mentor Delbert Gish, he studied the classical traditions of drawing and painting passed down from the Russian school of teaching. Del Gish, who at that time was fresh from being taught by Sergi Bongart, was an enthusiastic teacher. They soon became good friends. Fonny says “Del changed my life,and gave me insight into what being an artist is truly about”. After graduation, Fonny was invited by NNC to stay on with the college as a teacher, where he taught pottery for two years. He then taught art in the Idaho public school system for ten years. “During the time I spent teaching I continued to do my own art, and always planned to quit teaching and become a full time professional artist”. Fonny has never wavered from the goal to spend his life as an artist. He has spent significant amounts of time learning how to be a potter and a sculptor, and the last twenty five years have been devoted solely to painting.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 124px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKWkaTWPHhR1zMa4GKKN4-6fxAVjgf9l2lAkXToBvKS16etWFqIyo-1TIRZvdm03TXTiT4xMqsbZo5L_5CQ5441aTJnI97dgA_LGxd761Y5KxTDLE3e9smbVSA5b4VSfFjhRN0JgE6od3B/s320/Picture1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460602377091051250" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTAghdllc9-n7o02HZhUFFsJKf4_4lFLHe5jl2kLBNKyaIs0vE86l_2eaRPn7iM6cQ_lzPX84C1fZ1wRAGeghKD7-OnMmS5l0C8SnDlGI2MNLi5mQeTnFIClaLziSe8clVKmPKwW9SeI3d/s320/Picture2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460602486902398178" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 253px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKsvG-9HP_4d7a2D-8SCLKQXvONylA1jOIZg4HtjkPOGSaNdNiSB09FCMKvb6UfyCJAPMAaDSFokqzyVFt7AReaWmI98KJcdnkXr7ATcqi5GgZANYS6N6Hs9p20bDenQ1w23m8mXntEAWm/s320/Picture3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460602599744714226" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 248px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizhutUlgcUbosxvVWZPiZ-14kaGUmyyDTMGPsawgU57n9VEz46NwVIxKN4gVfe7hxmMhoTMNHmX0svLvYTR43aPc2b7EmUrRN7KXHLZq8cG3UVW_bVt9iBH69HUSZHo5OOJq0eBS6qsHwq/s320/Picture5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460602690336642210" />iamsomewherehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02789033629444171033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1278692454065692893.post-87845988466405645382010-04-11T07:24:00.001-07:002010-05-06T14:12:30.808-07:00B&W Photo - PortraitOur most recent assignment in my intro to creative photography class was portrait photography. I thought I'd pack along my digital SLR just to help set up the shots before taking the film equivalent, which was major helpful.

Overall I think they turned out fairly well for my first attempt at "real" portrait shots. Maybe an upper division photography major would look at them and laugh, but that's ok... just like a fine wine, I'll improve with time.

<img style="cursor:pointer; Sculpt something out of a single bar of WHITE soap. Sculpt something. Out of soap... sculpt. Crap.

Yeah, I've never really made a solid effort to sculpt something, not that I'm closed to the idea... I like to think of myself as very open to new things, but when you attach a grade to it and throw it at a panel of judges to critique things change just a bit. Bottom line is I didn't feel quite saucy enough to make this the scenario for my first sculpture. What to do.

Good news is we have our entire spring break to work on this project. Bad news is it took me most of spring break just to figure out what I wanted to do conceptually. Originally I wanted to melt the bar of soap down and create an action/still of what would look like milk pouring out of a milk pale slashing onto a floor. This remains a cool idea, but my ability and all-around practicality prevented me from actually pulling this off. What I ended up doing was a modified version of my original concept. Instead of pouring out from an elevated pale into a time-fozen "splash" I would just have a milk glass on its side with the milk running out of it. Sounds easy enough.

The most frustrating part of this project was what I thought would be the easiest - melting down the soap. Not the case... in fact it proved the largest hurtle to overcome. Blender, frying pan, microwave, oven, you name it and I tried it. What eventually worked was using a DOVE brand bar of soap finely grated in a double boiler and adding some water.

I'll post a few pics of the process and the final piece once I get it back from Earnest.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc_bzS8LPsj3SGpI1YgJpj0TO4tGicrPGuGj-59RRAnA7Q7f53cR4mlbEv4PHHR0SnDXN4mJiqjLKmeXGruGZwv6qtT4xIPWH2gYak2PBWITc5O7G5uh-8VkLPDELYJ47UyimgXS17zKrn/s320/shavings.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459118132814746770" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBjhnCPndyZfHJoasqFYopO3uxwGgPRdbQATJoyvI_BdMpkYW-QZ-iT3Ayzbb1Rog-ZvMNTmDg8M05gIXddYzIo3zE0agAdrYy8SKcC8OEqA-cbv6hvbOiiblKzB1luXA2mOrAJzKV7RQ2/s320/applyHeat.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459118253978544962" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKjheIDgnrePsPcBHfKlOiE8TGbbIEGR2nycbGuryEjzXp0hN0-GAHLimjSeypm5wUGk5w8e4jEeuYRtmjb5IRnLX48fzcXjRVxLPyjHM7QZUEC9UUUJQbefYJTZabGG4tkSj1fonl7o6Y/s320/melting.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459118359628669538" />iamsomewherehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02789033629444171033noreply@blogger.com0
